A review on biomass-derived hard carbon materials for sodium-ion batteries

This study aims to review recent research progress on biomass hard carbon materials used as anodes for Sodium-ion batteries(SIBs). The main focus of this review is on the mechanism of sodium-ion storage in hard carbon, the processing methods and conditions of hard carbon production process from biomass, the effect of different processing conditions on carbon structure, and the effect of different carbon structures on electrochemical performance. A direct relationship was found between the the sodium ion storage method and the structure of the hard carbon. Meanwhile, the type of biomass precursor and treatment directly affects the structure of hard carbon, with heat treatment temperature having the most pronounced effect. Higher heat treatment temperature will reduce the specific surface area (SSA) and increase the degree of partial graphitization, thus increasing the sodium ion storage capacity. Also, graphene lattice layer distance (d) between 0.37-0.39 nm are reported to be essential for high capacity.
